Window Tint Laws
Window tints may be an alternative for your car. It is a subject of state law. Window tint laws generally apply to on-road vehicles. But, there are distinct regulations for off-road vehicles. The rules for off-road vehicles aren't so strict as those applicable to vehicles on the road. There are some limitations on tinting windows.
New York
The state of New York has passed new window tint laws to assist drivers in making their cars look better. In accordance with the law change, drivers may tint their top 6 inches of windshields with an opaque film that is non-reflective. This film is allowed when it allows at least 70% of light to pass through the glass. Regular inspections by inspectors of vehicles will check your tint. In addition, the law prohibits dark tints on side windows as well as rear windows.
To get an understanding of what is legal, it is important to know the concept of VLT. The VLT is a reference to visible light transmission. States have varying laws regarding what they allow for tinted windows. New York law says that the VLT value is the highest and allows more light be able to pass through the film. For instance that a 75 percent VLT film will let approximately 75% light get through, whereas a 5% tint allows 5% of light to be allowed to pass through.
Pennsylvania
If you own a vehicle in Pennsylvania and you want to tint it, you can purchase tinted windows for it! You will need a special exemption if you wish to tint your windows to a darker tint. Window tints are permitted on the top three inches of Pennsylvania's state. There is also the option of installing window films up to 70 percent. It is necessary to obtain a special exemption to tint the rear of your windshield or side windows.
Pennsylvania window tint laws differ in comparison to other states. However, in most states, you can install window tints on your own windows. However, if you are going to have the tint installed by a company and the tint isn't legal. To have the tint installed, you can seek a medical excuse. Be aware that the police officer did not have any access to the tint prior to stopping you. That means the officer must have a valid reason to pull you over.
Illinois
Illinois has various window tint laws that are applicable to various types of vehicles. These include passenger vehicles and multi-purpose vehicles. The tint for passenger vehicles can't exceed 35% VLT. The tinting on the back windows can be allowed to be any shade. An MPV can have the tint as dark as 50% VLT.
Additionally, the law also allows special tints to be used for certain conditions. This applies to certain medical circumstances. For example, people suffering from disseminated superficial porphyria or actinic Keratosis or extreme photosensitivity to drugs, are exempt from the law. Certain cases permit tinting to be applied to certain areas, including the top six inches.
Texas
The state of Texas has strict guidelines for window tint on vehicles. The windows on vehicles can't be tinted over a specific percentage. This is called VLT. VLT is an acronym for Window Tinting Test. A fine of $1000 can be imposed. The law has been amended numerous times since the initial regulations were implemented in 2009.
There are some exceptions to the law. The law allows tinting to be applied to the two front doors, but not on the whole vehicle. These windows must transmit at 25 percent of visible light. Additionally, side view mirrors are required. There are also medical exemptions that are available to those who suffer from certain conditions related to light. Medical exemptions allow an opaque film to be placed on the doors and side windows nearest to the seat of the driver. But, a film placed on the back window can't be darker than that of the AS-1 line.
Washington, D.C.
Police can inquire if your car is subject to the window tint laws of Washington, D.C. According to the law, at least 50% of light must pass through your car's windows. The law only applies to rear and front windows. You must let at least 70% light through the tint if it's greater than 35%. The law could be violated for the first time and you could be issued a ticket. If you're caught a second time, you may be fined up to $5,000. If you're caught in the process, your car could be taken off the road.
To make sure you're following the law, the laws are constantly being updated. It's important to remember that your local authorities are the sole authority for these laws, so it is important to consult with them regularly. The amount of visible light that a tint permits to be absorbed by a window is determined through its VLT. The higher the percentage, more dark the tint has to be. If your tint covers more than 70% of the glass, it's not legal in Washington, D.C.
Michigan
It is possible to ask whether it's legal to put window tint on your vehicle. It's good news, Michigan tint laws are relatively permissive. You can be ticketed if you are stopped because of illegal tinting. In some states, this could be considered a separate offense. The tint shouldn't be more than a certain percentage.
There are some exceptions to this law. Melanoma, sun allergy, and Lupus are medical conditions that may be exempted from tint laws. To be exempted from the tint law, you will need to have the appropriate evidence.
