(Reuters) – The Canadian Grand Prix scheduled for June 13 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal has been canceled for the second year in a row, CBC Radio reported on Thursday, although discussions in Formula 1 were still ongoing.
With the spread of new COVID-19 variants and Canada’s battle to contain a third wave of the virus, Montreal health officials have concluded that the risks are high even when walking behind closed doors without a spectator, the CBC reported.
According to the CBC, F1 officials wanted to bypass the mandatory 14-day quarantine for hundreds of employees, crew members and drivers, rely on private medical staff, and let the entire operation run in a bladder.
The race is to follow immediately after Azerbaijan, whose Grand Prix is planned for June 6 in Baku and will take place after the cancellation last year.
“We are continuing our talks with the organizer in Canada and have no further comment,” an F1 spokesman told Reuters.
A spokesman for the Canadian organizer was quoted on the Autosport website as saying that the radio report referred to “a document with recommendations in the field of public health”.
“We as an organization have not received confirmation from our health authorities and will not comment until we receive official confirmation.”
Canada, with some of the strictest travel rules in the world, requires its citizens and residents traveling from abroad to self-isolate for 14 days.
International arrivals must be quarantined in a hotel for up to three days.
As one of Canada’s largest sporting events, it was the second year in a row that the Grand Prix was removed from the F1 program due to the spread of COVID-19.
Media reports suggest Turkey is ready to serve as Canada’s replacement.
The Istanbul racetrack is logistically cheap for goods from Baku and was also introduced at short notice last year to bolster a calendar ravaged by the pandemic.
