How your rural business can get a £ 3,500 boost to better broadband

Originally written by Anna Jordan about Small Business

Vouchers worth up to £ 3,500 are available for rural small businesses to cover the cost of installing gigabit broadband.

The next round of the UK Gigabit Voucher Scheme starts on Thursday April 8, 2021. From that point on, you can check that your premises are eligible to receive a voucher, find a list of eligible suppliers, and see which ones are active in your region. Please note that vouchers are only available from suppliers who are registered in the system.

What is a gigabit connection?

One gigabit is equal to 1,000 megabits. To get broadband at gigabit speeds, you need a full fiber connection.

Will i be eligible?

Companies are asked to self-certify that they are a small or medium-sized company. This means that your company must have:

  • Up to 249 employees and annual sales not exceeding £ 36M and / or
  • An annual balance sheet not exceeding £ 18 million

You will be asked to provide evidence of this status.

How does it work?

Once you have registered with your supplier, they will request a voucher from the government. You will then receive an email asking if you want to continue. Your supplier will work on delivering your new connection. The supplier will then send an email to determine whether the connection is working properly.

With a successful commit of over £ 73m, the RGC (Rural Gigabit Connectivity) voucher is currently closed to applications.
