My list of favorite doctor-run businesses
I firmly believe in the idea that doctors can and should start their own business. It can be anything from a hobby that brings a little extra income to a full blown business empire, but most importantly, running your own business can help you achieve goals you never thought possible.
Plus, a little financial independence is always a good thing.
Today I thought I’d share a list of my favorite stores with doctors. It really is an example of how successful doctors can be – not just in medicine, but also in business and entrepreneurship. These doctors built entire businesses from the ground up; some in health care and some in completely independent industries.
They are great examples of what is really possible and if you are anything like me hearing their stories is great motivator.
Note: I’m really excited that each of the doctors on this list will be speaking at this year’s Leverage and Growth Summit. To hear more from each of them, please sign up here!
Doctor of Finance
Doctor Finances is an online hub for everything finance-related. From teaching your kids about retirement accounts to explaining current stock market trends, this website is hugely popular for good reason.
Its founder, Dr. Dewan Farhana is an equal part doctor, technology entrepreneur, and financial literacy teacher.
As a first generation college graduate, she is no stranger to achieving a goal and she has been able to use that mindset to all kinds of successful endeavors.
Health media experts
Health Media Experts is a single point of contact for digital marketing with a focus on healthcare. The co-founder and managing director, Dr. Andrea Paul, started her career exclusively as a doctor, but has since branched into a variety of entrepreneurial roles: content marketing, SEO, web design – when it comes to building a solid business online presence, she knows how to do it.
If you’ve started your own business – online or otherwise – Health Media Experts are a phenomenal marketing resource.
Dr. Aaron Hell’s career has taken him far from intern in internal medicine to medical director and professor – not only in medicine, but also in business and science.
Somewhere there he co-founded Hippo Education, where he now serves as CEO. If you haven’t heard of it, Hippo Education is a service that brings doctors and clinicians new learning opportunities. You could say it makes group learning great again.
Health Digital / Skin Medicinals
It’s hard to talk about Health Digital or Skin Medicinals without talking to Dr. To speak Dhaval Bhanusali. In addition to starting these companies, he is a dermatologist and surgeon, currently working and teaching in New York City.
Doctor Bhanusali’s journey into medicine began at the age of 17. Since then, his research and knowledge have been published in numerous professional journals as well as in popular media where he is regularly invited for consultations.
To say that Dr. Bhanusali understanding what it means to be a doctor and an entrepreneur would be an understatement. At both Health Digital and Skin Medicinals, he’s seen cracks in the industry that needs itd be filled with high quality solutions. Both are excellent companies that I highly recommend.
Simply put, MAKEMERRY designs and makes bras for women who have undergone radiation for breast cancer.
This company was founded by Dr. Katie Deming, a radiation oncologist. Seeing firsthand how uncomfortable traditional bras can be for her patients, she decided to come up with a solution. Since then, MAKEMERRY has grown from a sideline in the garage to a huge company and has played an important role in countless women’s lives.
Black Swan real estate
If you are ever looking for real estate in the Midwest, you should definitely check out Black Swan Real Estate. Black Swan was founded by Dr. Elaine founded Stageberg and her husband Nick and has grown from a single home business to a seven-figure company in just a few years.
Now the company has expanded to include the training of other doctors to make their own real estate investments with passive income, and they strongly encourage everyone to seek financial freedom for themselves. As you may have guessed, I totally agree with this philosophy.
Doc outside the box
As a young doctor, Nii Darko felt the limits of his career. He longed to have a greater impact on the world and even to grow beyond medicine.
Through relationships with other doctors who had started their own businesses, he learned that there is definitely more. He decided to take some of their stories and use them to encourage others – and the Docs Outside the Box podcast was born.
It was a great success. In fact, it has grown into its own multimedia business. And now Dr. Darko also uses Equal Access Health and is a successful author. By the way, if you’re looking for a new podcast, you’re going to love Doc Outside the Box.
